“In Spring 1942, my mother, my half-sister, her two children and I were all selected to be taken to Chelmno to be murdered there. My mother begged me to escape and hide till the selection of our area of the ghetto was over. “Run in a zigzag,” she told me, “and don’t stop when they shoot or shout ‘Halt!’. I did as she asked and escaped that selection ...” Roman Halter

Exclusive UK Film Premiere ‘Otto Frank father of Anne’ followed by a discussion with Eva Schloss

Date: Wednesday 1 December

Time: Refreshments: 7pm Film: 7.30 | Discussion: 8.45

Venue: Centre for Jewish Life

Price: £10 | Students £5

The CJL is delighted to host the UK’s Exclusive Film Premiere, Otto Frank Father of Anne, produced by award winning and critically acclaimed producer, Pieter van Huystee, followed by a discussion with Eva Schloss, Otto’s step daughter, who is featured in the film.

Much is known about the diarist Anne Frank, but very little about her incredible father Otto whose own story and experiences are often over shadowed by his daughters.

After returning from Auschwitz, Otto Frank, the only survivor of the family, is confronted with Anne’s diary. He renews ties with his daughter by reading it. The film tells the story of what he went through, how the loss of his family scarred his life, how he dealt with the dilemmas that the publication of the diary brought upon him and how he made a memorial of his daughters legacy and became the father-figure for thousands of young readers worldwide. Understand this remarkable man whose amazing personality is clearly seen in Anne’s writing.

Similarly to Anne, Eva and her family went into hiding but were betrayed and captured by the Nazis and sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp.

Only Eva and her mother survived. In 1953, her mother married Otto, join us and gain a firsthand experience into Otto’s life through this film and the eyes of Eva Schloss
